Funding home repairs

Get up to $15,000 for needed home repairs and safety upgrades.

But you won’t do that alone.

Safety First is a program offered through the City of Aurora’s Community Development Block Grant fund to address safety issued in the homes of income-eligible homeowners. If you own a home within Aurora’s city limits, here’s how we can help you care for it. (And if you live near Aurora, contact us to explore other funding options!)

Get a loan – then get it forgiven.

If you need money for a qualifying repair and you meet certain income requirements, the city might help you with costs up to $15,000 in the form of a 50/50 forgivable/deferred loan.

• Loans are interest-free.

• Loans are deferred, so you won’t have to make payments.

• 50% of your loan is forgiven after 5 years if you meet requirements.

• The remainder of your loan is due only if you move or sell your house.

What can I use a loan for?

Loans cover safety-related work, which might include:

• Furnace and boiler repair or replacement

• Mechanical, electrical or plumbing system upgrades and repairs

• Roof and porch repairs or replacements

• Door replacements

• Radon remediation

Who qualifies for a loan?

• Live in the city of Aurora

• Be making repairs on a home you own and occupy

• Have a household income of less than 80% of AMI

  • That’s less than $89,700 for a family of 4

You’ll need to submit a full application and submit to a property inspection both before and after work is done. Certain property structures and locations may not qualify.
